These three free Sunday school lessons for 3–5 year olds are designed for short attention spans and big imaginations. Each lesson is about 20 minutes long and includes a story summary, a simple activity, a prayer, and a printable coloring page. Print this article as a PDF and you've got a ready-made preschool lesson plan.

Lesson 1 — Noah trusts God (Genesis 6–9)

Big idea: God keeps His promises.

Story (5 min): "A long time ago, God asked a man named Noah to build a HUGE boat. Noah obeyed, even when his neighbors laughed. God sent two of every animal — elephants, giraffes, even tiny mice. When the rain stopped, God put a rainbow in the sky as a promise."

Activity (5 min): Animal walk — kids waddle, hop, and stomp like the animals on the ark.

Prayer (1 min): "Dear God, thank you for keeping your promises. Amen."

Take-home: Noah's Ark coloring page (download below).

Lesson 2 — Baby Jesus is born (Luke 2)

Big idea: Jesus came for everyone.

Story (5 min): "Mary and Joseph traveled a long way to Bethlehem. There was no room at the inn, so baby Jesus was born in a stable with the animals. A bright star shone above and angels told the shepherds the good news."

Activity (5 min): Build a manger out of paper-towel tubes and brown crayon "hay."

Prayer (1 min): "Thank you, Jesus, for coming to be with us. Amen."

Take-home: Nativity coloring page.

Lesson 3 — Jesus is the Good Shepherd (John 10)

Big idea: Jesus loves and takes care of us.

Story (5 min): "Jesus said, 'I am the Good Shepherd. I know my sheep and my sheep know me.' Just like a shepherd cares for every single sheep, Jesus cares for every single one of us."

Activity (5 min): Cotton-ball sheep — glue cotton balls onto a sheep outline.

Prayer (1 min): "Jesus, thank you for taking care of me. Amen."

Tips for teaching 3–5 year olds

  • Keep the lesson under 20 minutes — they're done before you are.
  • Move every 5 minutes. Sing, stand up, act it out.
  • Repeat the "big idea" three times — say it, sing it, color it.
  • Send the coloring page home so families can talk about the story again.
